With the intention of improving the quality of natural resources management and sustainable development of the City of Velika Gorica, a project Participatory Management of Natural Resources was initiated as part of IPA 2012 programme Building Local Partnerships for Open Governance and Fight against Corruption in Responsible Management of Natural Resources.

Society for Sustainable Development Design (DOOR), The CIty of Velika Gorica, ODRAZ – Sustainable Community Development, Association of Cities in the Republic of Croatia and Green network of activist groups (GNAG) as partners of the project will be working on the promotion of transparency and involvement of citizens in management of public goods and natural resources in the area City of Velika Gorica area.

Overall objective of the project

To contribute to local CSOs capacities to monitor and cooperate with local authorities on the implementation of public policies relevant for managing of public goods and natural resources.

Specific objective of the project

To establish a local permanent partnership of civil society and local authority in a form of a multisectoral workgroup monitoring the management of public goods and natural resources, reporting on irregularities and steering public discussions on the issues raised, in the City of Velika Gorica.

Activities

A structured survey of public opinion on transparency and openness of local administration and of local policy schemes for managing local goods and natural resources will be undertaken.

Education on participatory management of natural resources and building capacities for monitoring and cooperation for local authorities (LA), civil society organizations (CSOs), media and interested public will be organized through:

  • seminars,
  • study tour to a community with established civic participation in public policy processes in the EU,
  • professional training program in the City of Velika Gorica and
  • service learning program for students.

Workshops for transfer of experiences gained during the first year of Project implementation in Velika Gorica will be held for civil and public sector and the media in Koprivnica, Osijek, Rijeka and Zadar.

General public will be addressed through local advocacy campaign motivating local citizens to take part in policy processes.

Key part of the project is the formation and work of multisectoral workgroup through which a strong cooperation between local authorities, civil society representatives, the media and interested public will be established. Workgroup will have at least 3 meetings annually when information about current natural management issues in the City of Velika Gorica will be exchanged and ideas about optimal solutions of these issues will be proposed. In addition, the workgroup will indicate irregularities in public and natural goods management.
